Film and debate: "MUSALSAL ... Documentaries from the Middle East"
Settlements in Palestine, the news channel Al-Jazeera, transsexuals in Iran, an Israeli-Palestinian orchestra, Kurds in Turkey or postwar scenes of Baghdad ... Since September 2007 we screen authentic images of the MENA region in our monthly documentary serial MUSALSAL and invite experts to debate the topic with the audience. A cooperation with Cinémathèque Leipzig.

Panel discussion: “Islam in the German media – the balancing act between factual analysis and promoting stereotypes” - Muslims have become the permanent focus of media attention, which often leads to the (re)production of stereotypes. At this event journalists and academics discussed such stereotyped views and explored possibilities for a civilised and respectful coexistence.

Lecture: “Where is Syria heading?” – The media often portray Syria as a major power-broker in the Middle East that is responsible for violence and conflicts. Journalist and author Carsten Wieland analysed the country’s role and interests within the network of international relations.

Lecture: “Digital Intifada - Images and self-image of the Arab world in computer games” – What stereotypes are being conveyed by computer games, and what do programmers and players think about their manipulative power? Doctoral candidate Vit Sisler from Prague University gave an account of his research findings.

Panel discussion and seminar: “’Anti-Semitism’ in the Arab world” – Whereas in Europe and Israel the Holocaust determines the way anti-Semitic sentiments are dealt with, Arab societies have a different background.
